Karen’s work is an archeological exploration into the structure and content of the book. In these works, her goal is to transform how a book functions, remove it from its familiar construction and reinterpret it as new and visually meaningful.

About the Artist

Karen Hawkins is a contemporary sculpture artist based in Austin, Texas, who breathes new life into old books, resource materials, and paper ephemera through her artwork.

As the digital age has transformed how we engage with books, e-readers have rendered the centuries-old form increasingly obsolete. Karen’s work challenges this shift by further objectifying books—exploring whether they can still hold meaning and purpose in a technology-driven world.

Her sculptural pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia, resonating with each viewer in a deeply personal way, shaped by their own experiences with books.

As our studio’s reach has expanded across the country, we continue to push the boundaries of this timeless medium, uncovering new ways to reimagine and honor the book as an artistic form. Explore our website to see what we’ve been working on—we look forward to sharing more of our journey with you!
