Mandalas
This piece is Karen’s interpretation of a mandala, crafted meticulously from cut and folded romance novels. The process begins with selecting these perfectly sized books, each chosen for their unique character. Hawkins then carefully cuts and folds these novels into specific geometric shapes. This phase of the work demands patience and precision, as each fold must be exact to ensure the overall harmony of the piece.
Once the individual components are prepared, they are methodically arranged. Hawkins assembles these folded forms into a cohesive design, akin to assembling a perfect puzzle. This arrangement is not arbitrary; it requires reflective thought and purposeful interpretation of form. Each piece is placed with intention, contributing to the larger mandala structure. The final artwork is a testament to geometric precision, as the assembled forms come together to create a balanced and symmetrical composition.
The creation of this mandala is a deeply meditative practice. It involves a rhythmic, almost ritualistic process of cutting, folding, and arranging, fostering a state of mindfulness and introspection. Through her art, Hawkins transforms these novels into a new form and invites viewers into a space of contemplation and tranquility.
